At last, the skill of quilters is being recognised as an art form and those selling commercially are being paid for their time as well as covering the cost of materials.
Historically of course quilts were made mostly, but not always, by women at home with their families and the quilts were made from old clothing no longer wearable by the family, textile scraps and pieces woollen uniform. Often seen as just part of ‘what women did’ rather than being recognised as skilful household management. It must have been a real joy to receive one as a wedding gift or emigration gift and a true treasure.
The trend for buying high cost new fabric has taken over which inevitably makes a quilt a much more luxury item either as an item to cover us and keep us warm or as an art item on display. However the huge rise in the cost of living and the drive to reduce landfill may hopefully turn us once again to using and recycling pre-loved fabrics.
